Notice Regarding Prescription of Weight Loss Medications

 March 19, 2024

We are encountering significant challenges in securing consistent and adequate supplies of both crucial drugs that are currently being prescribed for weight loss. As you may have heard, the medications Semaglutide and Tirzepatide (Wegovy and Zepbound) are medications that are approved for weight loss. These medications have been inconsistently available yet recommended for patients to continue indefinitely. This has been frustrating for patients and providers as well as creating an incredible strain administratively on our nursing and provider staff that is unsustainable for the practice.

Many insurers have excluded these medications from their formularies completely, which generates an appeal process that is unsustainable for our practice.

Given these challenges, we have made the difficult decision to discontinue prescribing these medications for weight loss as a practice policy. We understand the concerns and inconveniences that this might bring, and we apologize deeply for any disappointment this may cause you.

Please note, the same medications, Semaglutide and Tirzepatide, when prescribed for diabetes (brand names Ozempic and Mounjaro) are still prescribed for patients with diabetes. These medications are not available for patients without a diagnosis of diabetes.

Our current resources available to you for weight loss, as a patient of Acton Medical Associates, include our team of skilled Registered Dieticians who are available to meet with you.

Please do not call or schedule with your current primary care provider to request weight loss medication. We are unable to make exceptions to this new policy due to the lack of a consistent supply of the medication.

Thank you for your understanding and patience during this time. Your health and well-being remain our utmost priority, and we are committed to doing everything within our capacity to support you.

Sincerely,

The Acton Medical Care Team
